How to play Devil's Door

If you like Level Devil, Devil's Door is a free Level Devil–style troll game you can play right here. It looks like the easiest platformer ever made. It's shot like an old silent film: a dark stage, one spotlight, a grey slab of ground, a pale boy in a red scarf that streams behind him as he runs, and a door marked EXIT. Walk him to the door and the scene is over. The catch is that the level doesn't want him to leave. The floor gives way, spikes shoot out of nowhere, and the door doesn't always stay where it is.

You die a lot, and that's the fun of it. The screen dims, a title card says "And then he died. Again.", his scarf slips loose and flutters to the floor, and in under a second you're back at the start of the level. The trap you just fell for is now one you know, and the next try is the one that makes it.

Controls

Keyboard

• ← → or A D to move: the boy is off at full speed at once and stops the moment you let go
• Space, ↑ or W to jump (hold for a high jump, tap for a hop)
• R restarts the level, P or Esc pauses

Phone and tablet

Big left, right and jump buttons sit under the game: walk with your left thumb, jump with your right. The fullscreen button makes the stage as large as your screen allows.

Jumps are forgiving on purpose. A jump pressed a split second before landing still happens, and you can still jump for a moment after walking off an edge. When the level kills you, it's the level, not the controls.

What Act I will try

Act I has two scenes so far, with more on the way. Nothing on screen will help you: no signs, no hints, just the level's name in the corner. No full solutions here either, but these are the kinds of tricks waiting for you:

• Floor you can't trust. It looks exactly like the rest of the floor, right up until you're standing on it.
• Spikes that weren't there. From below, from above, always at the worst possible moment.
• Things you can't see. Some of the set only shows itself once you've run into it.
• A door with a mind of its own. Getting close to it isn't the same as getting in.

Tips

Look before you leap. On a new level, go a few steps at a time and let the trap show itself. The boy starts and stops on the spot, so short taps on a direction let you creep up on a trap.

Remember the spot, not the timing. Traps fire at the same place every time. Once you know where something happens, plan for it just before you get there.

Count your deaths. The skull in the corner counts every death on your run, and the level menu keeps your fewest deaths for each level. Going back to beat a scene with fewer deaths is half the fun.
