What is the Chrome dinosaur game?

It's the no internet game: the little endless runner that shows up on Chrome's "No internet" page when your connection drops. A pixel-art T-Rex runs to the right, and you jump and duck past cacti and pterodactyls until you hit one.

What is it called? It has no official product name. In Chromium's source code it lives in a folder called dino_game and the character is a T-Rex, so people call it the dinosaur game, the dino game, Chrome Dino, the T-Rex game, T-Rex Runner or dino run. According to Google's blog, its internal codename was "Project Bolan".

Where did it come from? Google's official blog says the idea of hiding an endless runner on the "you are offline" page came up in early 2014, and by December 2014 the game was on all platforms. It was made by Edward Jung, Sebastien Gabriel and Alan Bettes of the Chrome design team. The dinosaur is a joke about going back to the "prehistoric age" when there's no Wi-Fi.

What is this page? An unofficial port of the open-source Chromium code (BSD license) by blockblast.co. It uses the original sprites and sounds and follows the original obstacle and speed rules, so you can play the Chrome dino game online for free, with your internet on and nothing to install.

How to play the dino game

Press Space (or tap the game on a phone) to start. After that it's all timing.

On a computer

A quick tap is a short hop and a held key is a full jump, which you'll need for groups of cacti. If you press ↓ in mid-air the T-Rex drops quickly, and if you keep holding ↓ as you land it goes straight into a duck.

After a crash, Enter or a click restarts at once. Space and ↑ wait about 1.2 seconds and start the new run when you release the key, so mashing jump in a panic won't restart by accident. The game only takes Space and the arrow keys while at least half of it is on screen or you've clicked it; when a link or button has keyboard focus, those keys do their normal job.

On a phone or tablet

Tap to jump and keep your finger down to jump higher. In the air, slide your finger down to drop fast, and keep it down as you land to duck; lift your finger or slide back up to stand. Sliding down on the ground does nothing, so jump first if you need to duck. Portrait works, and for a bigger picture you can turn your phone sideways and tap the fullscreen button at the right end of the bar under the game.

Is there a level 2?

No. There are no levels to unlock. The run just keeps getting faster, and night mode comes and goes along the way.

Pausing

On any device, the game pauses by itself when you switch tabs or apps, the window loses focus, or you scroll the game out of view. It also pauses when rotating your phone or resizing the window changes the width of the game screen. On a computer, resizing the window doesn't pause the game as long as the game screen stays wide enough (about 600 pixels or more). A paused run doesn't resume on its own: press Space or ↑, or tap the game, and you carry on with your score intact.

How to open the dinosaur game: offline, with internet or chrome://dino

Want the version built into Chrome? Pick the way that fits your situation:

• You're offline: turn off Wi-Fi and mobile data, then open any website in Chrome. The dinosaur appears on the "No internet" page. Press Space on a computer, or tap the dinosaur on a phone.
• You're online and using Chrome: type chrome://dino into the address bar. Google added this address so you can play without disconnecting. Chrome on Android works the same way.
• You're online in another browser, or chrome://dino won't open: play on this page. Your connection stays on the whole time.

On school or work devices the built-in game may be switched off. Chrome has an admin policy called AllowDinosaurEasterEgg, and when an admin hasn't set it, the game is disabled on Chromebooks enrolled in an organization.

Dinosaur game unblocked: play at school or work

"Unblocked" is what people search for when they want a version of the dinosaur game that isn't blocked on a school or work device or network. Here's what this page offers, and what it can't promise:

• It's a normal web page. There's nothing to download and no browser extension to add.
• It doesn't rely on chrome://dino, which is disabled by default on enrolled school and work Chromebooks.
• The game code, images and sounds are all served from this site rather than embedded from a third-party game portal.

It's a normal web page with no download or extension, so it opens wherever this site isn't blocked by your network. If your school or company does block the site, this page can't get around that, and it isn't meant to.

Obstacles, speed and night mode

A run follows the same pattern every time, just faster:

1. At the start you only meet cacti, small or large, alone or in groups of up to three. Hold the jump key for groups.
2. Once the game picks up speed, wide groups of large cacti start to appear, and so do pterodactyls. On a computer they fly at three heights and on touch devices at two; the height tells you whether to jump over or duck under.
3. As you keep going, the gaps between obstacles widen with the speed, and the same obstacle can't repeat too many times in a row, just like the original.
4. At top speed the T-Rex stops accelerating and the difficulty stays where it is.

When the game area is narrow, such as a phone held upright, the starting speed is scaled down the same way Chrome does it. If the width of the game screen changes mid-run, the game pauses and recalculates the speed for the new width when you continue.

Every 700 points the colors invert for about 12 seconds, with a moon and stars in the sky, before day comes back. On this page only the game frame goes dark; the rest of the page stays as it is.

Score and high score

Your score is the distance you've run, so it climbs faster as you speed up. Every 100 points you hear a chime and the number flashes for about two seconds, holding still until it catches up.

Your best run sits next to HI in the top right and is saved in this browser only. Another device, another browser or a private window keeps its own score, and clearing this site's data resets it. To reset it yourself, click or tap HI after a game over so it starts blinking, then click or tap it again while it's still blinking; if you wait until it stops, nothing is cleared. After your first run you can send your score to friends with the share button under the game.

Credits and license

• The original is the dinosaur game built into Google Chrome. Its code, sprites and sounds are published by the Chromium project under a BSD license. This page's game is a modified port of that code for the web and uses the original sprite files unchanged and the original sounds, converted to a format every browser can play.
